If I say " 7 squared", that means "7 X 7". So, the square of a number is a number times itself.

The saying originates from the numbers of units in a square area.
for example if i have a bathroom floor that is 10 tiles wide by 10 tiles deep then i have a square that has dimensions of 10x10 and thus there are 100 tiles. the principle is used in counters when you are doing early place value calculations. remember the singles, sticks and squares of counters that we used to remember the value of the ones, tens, and hundreds places in numbers?

incidentally, the name cubed refers to the same type thing, take for example again, my bathroom, that might have a wall height of 10 tiles and thus there could be 1000 tile sized cubes contained in my bathroom.

so squared is any number multiplied by itself

example 10 squared = 10x10 which = 100

and cubed is any number multiplied by itself and then again by the original number that produces a "cube"
did that help?

example 10 cubed = 10x10x10 which = 1000
