We have a very friendly yellow lab who loves to chase squirrels, birds, anything that moves in our backyard. We also have a guinea pig. The guinea pig and the lab get along very well in the house. Is this normal for a Lab? I know that Huskies and many other dog (esp hunting dogs) aren't good with guinea pigs, do I have an extra friendly lab or is this normal?

HA HA HA Thanks for the answers. I'll have to work on the carrot thing. That's just too cute!
It is extremely cute to see the guinea pig and the dog. The pig is so interested in the dog, it's hilarious. Anytime they're in the living room together, the pig makes a B-line straight for the dog.

Nope, the dog is male. He's a great doggie- best in the world, in my opinion. He's loyal, sweet, intelligent, not too much of stray-er and very very friendly. I love him to pieces. In recent years, he's taken a certain liking to me. I think it's because I'm home with him all day whereas my husband goes to work. I always worry what will happen when the dog is gone. Anyhow, thanks for all of your answers. :)

LOL I really don't think that my dog is attempting to mate with the guinea pig. The pig was added later, we've had the dog for 5 yrs and the pig for less than 1 yr. It is a funny thought to think of a 70 lb Lab thinking that a 1 lb guinea pig is the dominate animal in the home but it wouldn't surprise me with some dogs!! :)

my spaniel used to drop take the carrot from the fridge and take it to the g.pig so Mr. Pig would eat it from his mouth.
It's what your lab and my dog were taught, good mannors and respect in the house.
if left out in the yard, wild, the g.pig might run and Lab might chase.
so cute that they get along!

We think that you have an extra friendly lab! We also think that he might be mating, and/or confused. Either way, you are very lucky to have a dog and should enjoy it! About the guinea pig, was he there before the dog, or did you get the guinea pig first. He might think the guinea pig is in control.
~ Best wishes!

not in all probability! For one subject, hamsters can easily get away out of their cages mutually as guinea pigs will not be able to flee. additionally, whoever stated guinea pigs chew extra advantageous than hamsters are completely incorrect. For the completed 2 years i've got had my guinea pigs, i've got by no skill ever gotten bitten.

You are very fortunate. A lot of dogs would go after a guinea pig, same as a squirrel. We had a yellow lab. It didn't even like other dogs. It also went after our parakeet in its cage one night, scary! Is your Lab a female, that may make a difference too, ours was a male. Yours might have a strong mothering instinct, if it is a female.

He's used to him but he chases strange animals, ones that he can't ever get close enough to smell. This is common especially for a lab, very curious on their surroundings. If the guinea pig were a cat he would be the same way towards other animals/critters in the yard. I hope this was helpful!

your lab has friendliness issues because my labs would kill a guinea pig if it were in front of them.
