Why is lettering on the front of some vehicles "backward"

When I learned this a year or so ago it seemed so simple I wanted to smack myself.

Ambulence in spelled backward on some Emergency Vehicles so that when they are coming up from the behind, people can look into thier rear-view mirror and read what the lettering says. If it wasn't backwards, all you would see was a jumble of letters, and you might not move off the road, slow down, ect.

So the moron in the car ahead sees it forwards in their rearview mirror and (hopefully) knows that they have to pull over.
