When I learned this a year or so ago it seemed so simple I wanted to smack myself.
Ambulence in spelled backward on some Emergency Vehicles so that when they are coming up from the behind, people can look into thier rear-view mirror and read what the lettering says. If it wasn't backwards, all you would see was a jumble of letters, and you might not move off the road, slow down, ect.
