A farm is a world of its own, isolated from the wider world. The animals on a farm are either bred there or purchased at a young age. It is home for them. Humans come and go from a farm, but animals rarely do.

The nearest comparison is a small village on an island. In that setting, you can use humans instead of animals. The isolation would have the same effect.
