I.e. Marc Jacobs is an actual person. So is Coach a person? Or is it just a brand name...?

It's just the brand name.
It's actually Coach Leather Goods.
Sara Lee (surprising as it sounds) actually bought the Coach Leather Company in 1941.

I believe that Coach is supposed to be an actual name brand, however, I don't own any Coach purses or whatnot. Some can even be fake, and it can be difficult to tell. I'd seen a news program that said that a fake is usually made with less quality material and perhaps the stitching is not as uniform(?) Perhaps it's best to get name brands from the manufacturer and/or a store for only that brand name.

yeah coach is just a brand name that someone made up unlike Chanel or Marc Jacobs.. Tommy Hilfigure or Dior

No, Coach is a company but not the name of a particular designer.
Their stuff is awesome though.
