The Big Bang and the Big Crunch are among these theories...
My theory is that the universe began as nothing and that somehow it created an atom and then the Big Bang occurred. How nothing craeted an atom is probably impossible to explain so that is why I would like to know other theories to perhaps find an answer as to how nothing can create somthing. The universe had to begin as nothing because you cannot ask the question how was that nothing created...or can you?

I don't like your theory for some reason. And maybe the big bang did come out of nothing from the perspective of its inhabitants. Maybe something outside our universe created our universe. Like if we found out how to create a universe somehow.

Anyway, wikipedia probably has all the theories in a list.

Checked, and yup:

There is a mountain of information out there on cosmology, but for a a good casual (but engaging) read, I reccomend anytihng by Brian Greene.

The currently accepted theory is called "inflationary theory", which traces the universe back to within the tiniest fraction of a second of its existance. Earlier than that point, we don't know what happened yet, so your theory is as good as any regarding that time period!

Actually, there are a number of theories that suggest how "something" could be created from "nothing", but they are all rather technical and you've got a great deal of reading and learning to get through before we can talk about that!

there are so many theorys on the origin and destiny of the universe. i will explain 2: one we are all familiar with is creationism: that we all where created by one supreme God. the other, a relatively new theory is the super string theory, or the 11th dimension theory. me explaining it would take to long. i suggest running a yahoo! search.

Well, your theory is really similar to Stephen Hawking. He thought it came out as nothing and it started to expand.

Those three are the only ones I know: The big bang and crunch and Stpehen Hawking's.

The universe is, always has been and always will be. It is eternal. It is filled with Life, billions and billions of beings all living and acting as one. This mass harmony and united force is what us separated ego-selfs here on earth term as God. When we open our awareness to this truth, it is a step towards ego-distruction and unity with this all-powerful force.
