go to some old classic rock songs such as.
smoke on the water (my first song) deep purple
iron man- black sabbath
or go with some pop punk songs like
brain stew- greenday
radio- alkaline trio.....
i would tell you just to check out bands you like or have heard and some cool guitar riffs that you heard.

They song that seems to be the standard starting song for rock guitar is "When I Come Around" by Green Day. Also "Glycerine by Bush because they're almost identical.
They use power chords which are a variation of bar chords but it's just one shape so you can check those out.

Nirvana is perfect for the beginning guitarist. I would suggest learning stuff you really like and already have in your brain. Bob Dylan and Neil Young songs are usually fairly simple as well.

I would start out with Trilogy Opus Suite # 5 by Yngwie Malmsteen, then I would work my way through the 25 caprices by Paginini. After that you can claim yourself as a great guitarist. Think big, not small and you will be great.
