I've been playing guitar for two and a half years and I started off with a guitar book called "Guitar Theory 1." Currently I'm almost done with the 2nd book (there are 3).

So, my word of advice is... buy a good guitar book that teaches you basic stuff. If you take lessons, ask your instructor to help you find a good basic book. If you are teaching yourself, I advise getting an instructor. It's so much easier and you learn more of what you really need to know.

At this moment, you probably will have to work on songs like Mary Had a Little Lamb and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. That's where I started, and now I can play anything including AC/DC!

Oh, and make sure you start off using an acoustic guitar! This will allow you to stretch your fingers and strengthen them so that you can play more complex songs.

Good luck and have fun!

get lessons. i tryed to learn on my own and its REALLY hard. but you are determined to start learning songs now i would suggest getting some guitar tabs...unless your really good at reading music. Some easy songs are smoke on water, the beginning of seven nation army by the white stripes and the begining of come as you are by nirvana. you can get these tabs at www.ultimate-guitar.com
