Or does it rather give an idealized image of them? Does Hogwarts refer to public schools at all or to other types of schools? I'm writing my thesis on the topic but I have not much inside information on British schools.

you mean in books one to six.

You would have to search quotes on uncle vernon from the first chapter of books two, three, and four. best guess.

I am sure that you can make a case for a parody or idealized version. i dont think JK goes out of her way to do either.

There is one major sport. The food is pretty good. some of the teachers are really boring. I think to pull off the parody, you would have to discuss teachers and staff, the Forbidden Forest, maybe the Triwizard tourney, and who knows what else you ve got.

I dunno where you are getting info on british boarding schools.

They do discuss caning and boxing in discussions of british public schools.
