Hardly. Collectors are collectors. First editions tend to be worth more, not less, than a contemporary copy of a book so they are definitely worth collecting.

Mr Ego??? Is there nothing that you like well enough to collect? I collect James Patterson First Editions, because I like the author. My husband collects First Edition Stephen King novels. Neither of us are egotistical, it's just something we like well enough to collect. It is something that gives us pleasure, something we enjoy, that's all.
