I am not a Christian, and I do find the smug certitude, and utter intolerance (one person who answered said "...we KNOW", for example) that some of them display to be irritating, but it is understandable, too. Most people are Christian (or Jewish or Muslim, or any of the other similar affiliations), because they are brought up that way, and it has thus become a cornerstone of their worldview- Something that they therefore identify with closely and personally. To examine critically the nature of one's cultural inheritance and gain perspective on it can be quite frightening and threatening for many, and very few will have the courage to undertake it. Many if not most will instead become more entrenched. One reason for this, as well as the appeal that such beliefs have, is their belief in a "personal" god. That is, one that has a more or less human personality, and takes a personal interest in our affairs. Perhaps one of the greatest fears that humans have is the fear of being alone, and these types of religions address that fear, and also provide them with a parent figure to look up to, and seek moral guidance from, as well. And unlike flesh and blood parents, this god-parent never has to die...
That of course, brings us to another major fear that most people have, and that is the fear of death. The nature of this fear lies in ego's knowledge that death is the ultimate and final discontinuation of the story, but in Christianity-like beliefs, if we please the "ultimate parent", God, well enough, then we are rewarded with never having to deal with this fear.
Yet another reason is justice, and the sense of justice that most have. Many like to think that if someone commits grave injustices, then they will be punished for them, if not here, then in an afterlife. And although there are other reasons for these types of religious beliefs, I'll touch on one more important one, and that is community. People like the sense of belonging to a group with similar view points, whether it be a religion, or being a fan of a particular sports team. The problem, of course, can be seen in both religious wars, and in soccer hoodlums beating up fans of an opposing team.
While I do not believe that Jesus was the literal "son of God" or any such thing, nor most of the other beliefs that grew up around him, I do believe that he was a wonderfully wise and charismatic spiritual teacher. His central, most original teaching was simply "Love your enemy". But it is very, very profound. It states not to judge others, and Jesus appeared to have a firm grasp upon the fact that most of the evil in this world springs from just that- Judgement and intolerance of others. The Bible, while it also has its fair share of not only sheer non-sense, but also racism and almost every other brand of hatred and ignorance, also has a great deal of human wisdom. Jesus, from The Sermon On The Mount, said, "Before you point out the speck in your brother's eye, remove the log from your own". The very act of judging makes one no better in a very important respect than the person being judged. Very few "Christians" understand this, it seems, but if you can give up hating them, and instead understand that they are being very, very human with very human fears and frailties, then you will in fact be more "Christian" than they are, whether you believe in God or not...

JayR, I hope this true story helps you and others accept there is a God. My nephew at the age of five had a personal encounter with Jesus Christ himself. He had been attacked by demons who kept scaring him and laughing sarcastically at him. Then someone with a white tunic, a sash over his shoulder wearing sandals whose face was shining brightly approached the demons. He shot arrows at them and they run off. When they run off, my nephew asked Jesus " Who are you"? and he replied " I am Jesus". My nephew asked him prove you are Jesus. And Jesus showed him the palms of his hands. His palms were scarred (i.e. showing the marks of the nails that were driven through him when he was crucified). JayR, God exists and I hope you get to know him. John 3:16 in the bible says "For God so loved the world that whoever believes in him will not perish but have eternal life". That is a promise we only receive if we ask. We won't be on this earth forever and we lose nothing accepting God is the centre of everything.

You must also had the truth that is in the Bible since you hate the Bible and God. It is sad to see but God will show you who He is and you will see the son of God which is Jesus when He comes back to earth then you will believe instead of believing in the lies of Satan.

Please read my words carefully:
If you see footmark in the sand, you'll say that someone passed from here...
If you see a piece of dog sh*t on the ground, you'll say that a dog passed from here...
So what about the enormous universe, the sky, stars, planets, earth and all the beauty in it, doesn't it lead to that someone made it?!!!
Some people say that everything is created by itself after the big-bang... I won't ask you about what caused the big-bang, but I'll ask you a simple question:
If you take all the letters of the alphabet, multiples of them, and you threw them randomly on the floor. Do you expect (by a chance of one in infinity) to get a poem like shakespear's??!!
Can't you see how organized our universe is, the planets, the eco-system on earth, look even in your own body... Can you control your heart-beat? Can you control your breath while you're sleeping? Who stopped your eye-lashes from growing after reaching a certain length? Who told the baby turtles to move towards the sea and not to the earth after they come out of their eggs? Who taught the bird how to make nests?
My friend, think with your heart and brain. If you're still lost, think about the following:
Do you know how to play safe?
Non-believer's case:
If there's no God and you do all what you want in life, then nothing will happen to you after life. But if there was God and you were mistaken, then you'll blame yourself FOREVER...
Believer's case:
If there's God and I followed His commands in life, then I'll be in Heaven after life FOREVER. But if there was no God and we're mistaken, then nothing bad will happen to us after life...
Now you know how to play-safe, in case you're not convinced?

You can't prove to me that there is no God. So if atheists and non atheists cannot agree, why don't we agree to disagree.
If your cousin wants to believe, how does that hurt you? Is she forcing you to follow her beliefs.
Maybe you should look at your own behavior, you are full of hate. And in that condition, the one you hurt most is yourself.

For one....we don't "think" we are right, we KNOW!
And for two....do you honestly believe that the world just "started" sometime? And everything we need to sustain ourselves, like the proper air, water, food, etc. just simply happened? NOT! So, you are free to choose whatever you wish, just hope you don't regret it later on.
