Robots were created first in science fiction. The whole science of robotics (and the word) was created by Isaac Asimov in the 1930s.

In real life, robots are limited to industrial applications. They can be programmed to do a set sequence of actions exactly the same every time. Tedious tasks which would have required humans to do are done precisely by robots. This has resulted in more profits for the companies and fewer workers.
