The population of the U.S. is roughly 375 million. Once that number reaches a billion (like it has in India and China), will another digit be needed?

Correction....the population of the U.S. recently surpassed 300,000,000.

Even if SS number are recyclable, that doesn't solve the problem. Each of the 1 billion residents will require a number, which means all 999,999,999 of the numbers will be used simultaneously.

When people die and their SS# gets retired, maybe it gets reused after a certain amount of time passes.

A multi million dollar bill to eliminate social security will be brought to congress. Much easier than adding a digit.

THEY ALREADY HAVE!!! Many are being used by more than one person now. We had a Mexican fellow apply for a job and he had the very same ssn as someone else. He had to use a different number before they hired him.

they do reuse social security numbers after a certain amount of time after a person has died...they won't run out...if they do, they will probably just use 10 digit numbers, hey weird huh?

Start scrambling them in a computer. Kinda like the Lottery numbers...I would think. When I see a ssn that is used more than once...I see a counterfit if it belongs to a Mexican or any other foreigner.

I am sure they will cross that bridge when they come to it at some point in the 22nd Century or beyond.

That's a little far off for right now I would say, but really I don't think social security will be around that long.
