It appears there is no way to retain everything for immediate recall, but in the future when you need it--some of the original learning/theories may come back to you. It is easier to retain, if you put the information to immediate use, but you are in a learning mode, hence the difficulty.
Personally, the one reason I like graduate school so much is the fact your learn more about the topic that really interests you. I kept all my graduate books, and every now and then, I will go through and scan the highlighted text.
As one who is paying back many school loans, I can relate to what you are saying. You are probably retaining more than you realize. Good luck to you!

I feel that same way too, so much to learn. I found out the best way to remember is you have to be interested in it, make it fun, make it like a trivia game. Group studying is the best they say. Talking it out really help grasp your outstanding either by your self studying or study group, think of it as your teaching yourself if you teaching someone Else ask questions and look for answers, you'll be amazed. Usually learning things in the class, they build up on each other like math and linguistics. It's better to get it down pat first and as the class progresses the retaining stuff doesn't seem as hard once you get the gist of it, then as the class progresses you'll see how things fall into place. Another way is think how you can apply it to your life daily, like for political science and linguistics watching TV notice things that could make a connection like the news or as you read think how things connect. Challenge yourself any way you can, best advise is to teach you teach yourself and not depend on the professor best way is to teach yourself. Another way is taking a lot of notes while in class, reading, or rewriting notes after class can help a lot. Need to study everyday, at time it best when you study the same time every day, and that way your mind is programed into studying and is better to do it after class so your mind refreshes on what you learned. Hope this helps and Good Luck!

In my experience, the stuff you learn in class can indeed be fleeting if you don't use it afterwards. But if you have studied something, forget about it and then need to relearn it later you'll probably be able to pick it up again quickly. And stuff you use, you will get better and better at.
But more than the stuff and facts you learn, the most important thing is to learn how to think and to learn how to learn.

In order to retain information in your long term memory that gets used, you need to USE it. Its not enough to learn it , you need to apply it and use it often. We remember our phone numbers and those of our friends if we use them often. Now with automatic dialing and phone books often we no longer know our friends phone numbers by heart. The same goes for education. Look at the information see how many places you can use it, and use it often.
