In what sense might the original public demand for intervention in Cuba be said to reflect traditional American Idealism and Anti Imperialism?

The situation in Cuba could be compared to that of the 13 colonies - tyrannical rulership, except in this case by Spain. The US values freedom/liberty. This is what they hoped that Cuba could also gain. Spain as a colonial power being overthrown was aid for self-determination (choice of rulers).
