I was 16 and babysitting a couple of kids for the first time. Their house was very old. I knew this because it was attached to the 200 + year-old building next door that was being used as a county library.
There were quite a few ghost stories about the library and I was pretty impressionable as teen girls went. I guess you could say I was sheltered.
After I put the kids to bed, and the precursory getting up to use the bathroom, then getting up to drink some water and one more time to use the bathroom, they finally settled down.

I was pretty bored with the tv, (before the days of cable, see), I found a naughty book hidden under the couch cushions and started reading it.
Pretty hot stuff actually and was really getting into it when I heard a distant "boom" maybe a mile away and wondered what that could have been. About two minutes later, I heard another boom only this one was closer. Then a minute or so later a louder boom again.
I put down the book at this point and ran upstairs to check on the kids. Two more booms closer and faster. The kids were fast asleep, but I was getting really scared by now! They continued until I knew the next one is going to hit the house I am sitting in! Then, nothing! Until the next boom was to occur, and it happened on the other side of the house!
It skipped me! Boy, I almost had a heart attack! I was too embarrassed to say anything to the parents when they came in about an hour later.
I did some checking on the history of their house and the one it was connected to.
It was a grand house, one of the only ones that was left standing after the Battle of Brandywine. The Battle of Brandywine was the deadliest of the Revolutionary War.
About 1/4 mile down the road was the Brandywine Battlefield National Park. Apparently what I must have been hearing was cannonfire from a battle that occurred some 190 years before!

Have you ever heard the story of Bloody Mary? If you haven't, the story goes like this. 10 years ago someone murdered the only child of this woman named Mary. She swore vengeance on the killer. Supposedly, the killer heard that she wanted revenge so the murderer killed Mary by stabbing her. She didn't die from the stabbing itself, but from all the blood loss after wards hence the name Bloody Mary. She didn't see her killer so she had no idea who to seek vengeance on when she went to the next world. Now, if you go into a darkened room with a mirror alone and say,"Bloody Mary, I killed your child" three times you go through the mirror and stay there until someone else recites the magic words therefore, getting you out of the mirror world. But if the killer goes though, he/she will stay in there forever and no one else can get in the mirror world. Supposedly, my cousin (aka the one who told me this story) went into the mirror world and came back after a few hours. I don't believe it though, he was drunk on Pepsi when he told me this.
