I am not sure about where and California you live . . . BUT I have lived in New England all my life. I love it. I live just down the road from Gray literally in Cumberland near the Gray line. Its very convenient to Portland. Which is Maine's biggest city. So don't feel like you are moving to the sticks.It is a slower pace in life but one that I enjoy. And if you are a single parent its a wonderful area for children. You will be conveniently located to the mountains and the ocean. 2 hours from Boston. Its really great. I hope that you like it. And I can also tell you that I am also a single parent and made a move from one state to another it gave me a great deal of independence and it all worked out for the best in my case I hope it does for you too.

Maine is a beautiful place to live, outside of the winters. I travel there from time to time just to see the lighthouses and the ocean. And I'm from upstate NY. If you are into history, Main has awsome attractions and I think the harbors are cool around Bangor. You wouldn't regret moving there. It's a peaceful place.

maine is very nice i have family there. my sisters husband is in bath maine. the people there are very nice unlike the people in cali its also very cheap the live there. down side is it so cold but i like the winter most people dont...
