The Asian Elephant is usually referred to as "Indian" mainly to distinguish it from African elephants and also because most are found in India.

HOWEVER, they inhabit a wide area from Pakistan, notably Thailand and neighboring areas in southeast mainland Asia. There are no elephants in Mid to Northern Asia, Korea or Japan or the Philippines, even if these countries are part of ASIA.

Asian elephants live in large blocks of forest near water sources and grasslands, habitat that has been greatly reduced in the last half century. They inhabit India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar (Burma), Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Malaysia, Nepal, Bangladesh, and southern China.

Oops, somebody already said that. I would add this:

The Asian elephant is on the red list of endangered animals.

Used to live mainly in India, then "India" was divided into 3 countries. Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh. The Asian elephant lives in all three. It also lives in Thailand and the entirety of that area including Cambodia and Vietnam. The locals use them as bulldozers and work animals. At oone point they lived up into Iran, and in the ROman era as far West as Palestine, though only in the domesticated sence.

Nope... India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Cambodia, the south of China, Laos, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia... it's all round that area.

There are four (or maybe five, no-one's decided yet) subspecies though, distinguished by size, whether they have tusks and things like that. They can all interbreed though, so they're the same species.

Elephants in Borneo are tiny, elephants in Sri Lanka are the biggest and often have a pale patch on their head.
