I'm not pregnant and I am beginning birth control pills. My period is not supposed to begin for another week or so but I was wondering if I began taking the pills the week before will there be any adverse effects? Will it delay the start of my period?

You're supposed to only start birth control pills once your period starts... it screws up your hormones if you don't, and the pills won't work as well.

In order for the pills to work effectively then you need to follow the directions that go along with the pills. Remember they are there for a reason and not just for decoration. You are suppose to start the pills on the Sunday immediately after your cycle comes or if your cycle comes on a Sunday then you start them the exact same day. You should still use other methods of protection the first couple of weeks on the pill (ex. spermacide, condoms, etc.). Remember that the pill doesn't protect you against AIDS, STD, etc. What's the rush to start the pill now and instead of waiting the extra week or so. It will not delay the start of your period, but if you want the pill to be effective, which would make sense then follow the directions I have stated above. Good luck!!

I would not suggest doing this. By waiting till after you stop your period or the Sunday after you start your periods helps with regulating the birth control. IF you started the pills now then most likely you would not have a period at all or have break through bleeding. Start off right and that is by taking it as prescribed in order for you to get the full effect of the birth control.

yes, you can start your pills at any time during the month. if you start on your period you are protected from pregnancy right away but if you start at any other time you have to wait AT LEAST a week (some say two weeks or one month) before having unprotected sex. it should delay your period as well, but it's normal if it doesn't for the first couple of months.

it could throw your cycle out of wack for a couple months, but that could happen anyway. just make sure to use some other form of BC for *at least* a week, if not up to 28 days for the hormone to take effect. and do your best to take it at roughly the same time every day (within the same hour) and an empty stomach is best (if possible) you want to ensure maximum absorption of the hormone, and the most consistent level in your system. And believe me, when they say 99% effective, they mean it (i have a beautiful baby boy to prove it!)

No you can control your periods. For the first little bit, there will be spotting though, that's your body's natural way of letting you know it's time. Just make sure you start on Sunday, even though it's still there. When I go on holidays, I will quit one week before, so that it comes earlier, then when it's time to holiday, you don't have to worry about bathing suit accidents, and the headache of packing "extra goods", and leakage. Hope that helps.
