Once you defeat Flannery, you will receive the Go-goggles from your rival. With those, you can enter the desert. Here you can find more trainers, desert exclusive pokémon and two fossils. If you pick one, the other will sink.

Train up to around level 31 (your whole team, not just one pokémon) then head back to petalburg city. You can now enter Norman's gym. The trainers all use normal type pokémon but the first few rooms will use items to assist them. There are three levels of rooms. The first level trainers both have Delcatty. One will use an x-speed to make his Delcatty faster while the other uses X-accuracy to make her moves hit more often. Use a fast pokémon thay can drop your oppoment in a couple of hits for the Accuracy room and use a slower pokémon with more power for the speed room.

The second level trainers use Linoone. The Zero-reduction room is the least dangerous. The trainer will use guard spec. to block status reduction moves such as string shot and smokescreen. Just attack rather to get by. The Defense room can be overcome by using special attacks rather than physical attacks, since the trainer uses X-defend to boost physical defence. The recovery room is tricky. The trainer will use potions to heal his pokémon. all you can do is attack with as much power as possible.

The final layer of trainers are very challenging. They both use Zangoose for one thing. Zangoose have awesome attack power and swords dance. The attack room will use an X-attack to increase Zangoose's already formiddable attack while the One-hit KO room will use a Dire hit to boost the critical hit ratio and then use Slash, a high critical hit ratio move. In both cases, send out a pokémon with strong physical defence. A Skarmory is perfect. Absorb the attacks and retaliate. Zangoose can't take much.

The Leader Norman is a very powerful trainer. This is mainly because he uses one of the most powerful pokémon in the game; Slaking. He has two of them, one of them is at level 31. Take advantage of their Truant ability and a lower special defence to take them down. Vigoroth is more dangerous due to a loss of Truant. Send in a defensive pokémon like Skarmory to deal with it.

Once you beat Norman, go and see Wally's parents. You willl gain HM03. This contains Surf, possibly the only worthwile HM move. You can use surf to cross water, and it has a good attack power and accuracy rating.

Go to Petalburg City Gym to fight Norman. You'll then receive Surf by Wally's relatives so you can continue through the west of Mauville City to Fortree City.
