I drive a '96 Dodge Intrepid with 160k+ miles on it. The Tranmission seems to be sticking in nuteral time to time. I have to Rev the engin up to about 4-5k RPM's for it to kick back into first gear at low speeds. Sometimes at high speeds it does not kick into the 4th gear so it wants to run 4-5k RPM at 50MPH. Is this just low tranmission fluid problems or is this a larger problem?

Check your fluid levels. If you're low on tranny fluid, this will happen all the time.

Automatics shift through a hydraulic valve body. If your fluid is to the proper level(you checked it, right?), then the valves are probably sticking, or the filter is plugged up so much the transmission is starving for proper pressure.

As a low cost first try, put a can of cleaner/conditioner in it, run it around as per directions on the can, then drain it and replace the filter. Put new fluid in it, and hope that helps.

If it doesn't help with that $30 fix, then you are going to be looking at $800-$1400 to get a rebuilt.

Ok to me it sounds like you have dryed seals in your transmission. This is not a good thing sorry.

Check your fluid first, and I would get it profesnionaly serviced and see what they say.Dont tell them about the problem as they are proned to rip you off, just ask for your auto to be serviced.

If they find anything wrong you will soon find out.

Now once the service is done it may be all good, just warn out fluid, if it isnt and they say you need a rebuild, personly i would not buy second hand as you pay a premium for the gearbox, and you dont want to be stuck with a lemon.

Good luck

Transmission may be slipping (get the bands tightened), but several things can cause this; bad "front pump", stuck check ball in the valve body come too mind. But the easiest is check your trans fluid level. It's the other dipstick and you check it with the engine running. If it's low, top it off. Be careful of moving parts when you do this!

I think you know the answer to this question.

It's a faulty transmission that needs to be checked out, and you can not do this yourself, obviously.

A rebuilt job can cost anywhere between $900 qne $1500

Get ready!
