you just give them a sponge bath , just wipe them off with a sponge or washcloth.. then when the cords falls all the way off , is when you can give them their first bath..

You can bathe them right away...either sponge bath or regular bath. Choose whichever you are most comfortable with. If you give a regular bath, be gentle on the umbilical stump and make sure it is good and dry after bathing (gently dry the area). Usually bathing your newborn 2 to 3 times a week is fine as bathing any more frequently can dry their skin. You do not have to use baby wash every time either. I used it only two out of three times a week to avoid causing skin irritation.

You can give only sponge bathes until the baby loses the umbilical cord. Then, once it falls off, you can put them in water to bathe them. You only need to bathe the baby 1-2 times per week, because a baby's skin is very sensitive and could be overly dried out from excessive bathing.
Also, if your baby has a problem with sensitive skin, try using regular Dove soap. My daughter's pediatrician reccommended this after a series of breakouts, and she's doing much better.

You should bathe your baby every day, before the umbilical cord falls off you should only do a sponge bath, when the belly button is completely healed, no scab, you can get the baby totally wet, this can take from 2 weeks to a month, each baby is different.
The link below may help you out.

Newborns can tolerate a "sponge" bathe. Warm water , baby soap and soft wash cloth. Have a nice towel ready so the baby stays warm. No more than a couple minutes is needed for the "bath" I would wait till the baby is a month old for a bath in a baby bathtub. Have everything you need right there as you can't let go or turn your back for one second. Once again a nice soothing bath makes for a happy baby.

you are supposed to give a sponge bath until the cord falls off, after that you can give the baby a bath. You don't have to do it everyday b/c it will dry their skin out 3-4 times a week is fine esp. in the winter months when babies don't sweat that much.

my son was bathed in the hospital the day after he was born. the midwives told me i could bath him as often as i wanted, and that some people only bath their babies once a week for the first few weeks. im sure it's fine to bath them with the umbillical cord on, otherwise they wouldn't have bathed my son in the hospital the day after he was born. i know my parents bathed me both in the hospital and at home when my cord was still on, becuase they have photo's.

Whenever you feel the need to bathe them.
You dont have to wait for the cord to fall off either, just make sure you dry it properly afterwards. I really have no idea why everyone says to wait.
At the hospital I went to the nurses come to your room and ask if you are ready to give the baby a bath yet.

You can give them a sponge bath anytime. Wait till the umbilical stump falls off before giving the first submerged bath. You don't want the umbilical stump to get wet. It keeps it too moist and it will have trouble falling off. So, sponge bath until the cord falls off, then regular bath in baby bath tub afterward. Good luck & congrats on your new little one!!

AFTER the cord comes off. If you bathe baby too soon, the cord might not dry correctly and it could get infected. Sponge bathe baby and clean cord with alcohol after every diaper change. That will help it dry faster to start bathing in water.

you can bathe them right away, usually they've been given their first in the hospital. It's best to bathe them 2 to 3 times a week, any more (like when we were kids it was daily) is hard on their skin, much less and they begin getting irritations.
Good luck!
Just reading the other answers - the cord doesn't have to be off, that's ancient info! the clip keeps it safe, if you have doubts, just ask your doctor or healthlink nurses. Just had a baby, this is what they told me...
