I would have no say the JLA, even though I much prefer the X-Men for no other reason than the JLA and the DC Universe in general have so many absurdly overpowered heroes it's really no comparison.
It isn't even close... Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Captain Marvel, Martian Manhunter, Dr. Fate etc. Those 6 alone could wipe out the X-Men.
By the way, in response to the poster above, the JLA roster is larger than that of the X-Men.
Oh and for that comment regarding Phoenix, she/it isn't an X-Men. Also for the Jean Grey/Phoenix character, she was a member of the X-Men but never really in control and as the Phoenix was only a member briefly.

Tough call. I mean at some point at least half of al the characters in the DC continuum have been members of the JLA in some incarnation or another. AND there have been probably somewhere around 300 mutants in the x-men or some associated sub-team. So it would really depend on WHICH incarnation.
For the sake of simplicity I will take the Originalmembers of each group.
X-Men - Cyclops, Beast, Angel, Iceman, Marvel Girl.
JLA - Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, Aquaman, Maritan Manhunter.
Based on those Line ups - Gotta go with the league. With the exception of Batman, the individual members of the league could over power the X-men easily. Lantern alone could handle the entire group.
Now if we want to step out on that limb and take the entirety of every roseter fo both groups with every member at their most powerful....Then is would come down to this. Every member of both groups would be put down except for 1 on each side, Dr. Fate (as Kent Nelson) and Phoenix, Specifically at her most powerful (see original series Uncanny x-men Issues 134-137.) In that instance I would have to go with X-men on that one..specifically becasue Phoenix was just more powerful. she could as little more than an after thought, destroy Fate either in mind or in body or both.

Purely on powers, I am going to say X-men. Four characters would be the difference, Professor X, Jean Grey, Cable, and The Scarlet Witch. The telepathic and telekinetic power of The professor, Jean, and Cable would give the X-men a slight edge. The Scarlet Witch's reality altering powers would be the deciding factor. Close fight though.

I gotta go with JLA - Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, Aquaman, Martian Manhunter .
The power of Kal-El, J'onn J'onzz, Diana are to much for any team, period! They tower over the X-men like gods. Batman, Lantern, Flash, and Aquaman are just icing on the cake. Do your homework.

Huge fan boy arguement coming on. I would say the X-men for 2 reasons. 1-X-men have a gigantic roster that the JLA couldn't match and 2-The man, the myth, the legend Gambit!!!!
