Honestly, I think the answer is right under your nose. Try Blonde Redhead, Bauhaus, alot of electro-punk, stuff like bibio would be your best bet if you are looking for mellow. The is alot of jazz and rap, but blonde redhead is best. It can make someone cry. Sean Lennon is really good too, alot of art punk from the late 70's. The Velvet Underground and Nico is a great album, and also Patti Smith, although sometimes she is too controversial. Acoustic stuff from Songs:Ohia is really good, and I have just started to listen to Grizzly Bear, he is pretty smart dude. Blues would have to be the most influencial though in terms of philosophy, but I don't know if its exactly what you are looking for. Anyway, somehow, I think you can find what you are looking for soon
