How are the Laspeyres and Paasche's indices put to practical use? PLEASE HELP ASAP!?

I'm asking here as I've no idea whether I'm allowed to ask my tutor (It needs to be mentioned in a report due 2.3) and have no idea how else to go about asking for it!
