When someone dies in the Kingdom Hearts world, their heart, soul, and body are separated, now, when Sora released Kairi from his heart by stabbing himself in the chest with the keyblade, his being was split into two parts, a heartless, and a nobody. Sora, being controlled by his heart, returned to his body, when fighting the other heartless off of Kairi. But his soul remained unattached, that is where Roxas comes into play. Roxas, is Sora's soul, so to speak, he is not evil, but confused, and reluctantly joins organization XIII. Organization XIII is a group of nobodies, (nobodies technically don't exist), who want to regain their hearts. Ansem the wise, is not dead, but a teacher. Ansem found some horrific secrets of the heart, unveiling the heartless, he stopped research immidiately. Now, his student, Xenmas, found his research and researched it further, and died, splitting him into a nobody and a heartless, both of which pretended to be ansem, and used his power, but also did horrific things.

A nobody is created when someone turns into a heartless. Roxas is Sora's nobody...from when he became a heartless in KH1...Ansem the Wise is a pretty good guy, he and King Mickey have some past history...Organization XIII is a brotherhood of powerful nobodys... hope this helps. :) Kingdom Hearts ROCKS!!
