the mid-wife said that when my baby was born, one of the three veins/arteries was missing from the umbilical cord, has any one heard of this before? will this affect my baby's health?

In a normal cord there are two small arteries and one larger vein. The vein actually carries oxygenated blood and the veins de-oxygenated, the only other vein that carries oxygenated blood is the pulmonary vein. When there is a vessel missing in a cord (usually an artery) it sometimes has implications for the babys renal system. I would hope that a follow up appointment has been made with an ultrasound scan possibly as well.

Go to www.ask.com and enter the question "Umbilical cord problems" and it will give you links. I know that there could be some complications, but not sure what they are.

Sorry I have never heard of this before. I would have thought the midwife would have been more specific and explained things to you. Still saying that, if it was something to worry about I am sure someone would have spoken to you about it but still ask your doctor about it and ask for a full explanation.

Why do not you talk to inOB/GYN doctoer they will know more about that.I don't think so because if the baby was born healthy then you do not have to worry about it
