How in the world did Hall of Famers like Dan Marino survive without a "posse"?

You need a posse if you are a fake thug like Stephen Jackson or Pac Man Jones. Dan Marino was a gangster so I'm sure he didn't need a posse for protection.

Your posse is an attempt to sound "gangsta" anymore and it is just your friends. It goes back more to the Old West days when it was the people who helped protect you. Who doesn't need some friends who will have their back. I'm sure Dan Marino had one. Just because he didn't have guys on the field go start fights or something doesn't mean they wouldn't protect him.

A posse is just a fancy word for a group of friends. You can get friends by joining a sports team, or getting a job. You don't exactly need a posse i guess but its fun to have friends.

Posses are buddies. You probaly have posse. Because you don't want to be a hermit with no friends.
