I have a 95' Nissan Maxima. Ment!
It only squeals for a couple seconds. Can it be because of winter and this sudden intense chill in Chicago? The car is pretty cold sitting outside all night. It never happened before, but now. I think its called the Alternator belt. The belt is located on the right side of my engine near the water pump. Looks and feels good though.
F.Y.I. My water pump is currently leaking. This all I can pretty much say about it.
Please help, thanks alot....

My belt is about a year old.
I am in the middle of installing my water pump.

If your water pump is leaking it could be dripping on the belt causing it to squeal until it dries off. You could also just have a glazed or slightly loose belt the alternator will charge at max output for a few seconds after start up because of battery drain from starting until the regulator gets its feedback from the battery to adjust the amp output of the alternator. I would try to tighten it up first to see if that helps but if the belt is glazed and cracked it would need to be replaced.

Everything is a little harder to get going on a cold morning. The power steering fluid is cold and thick, so it takes a little more effort to turn the pump. Cold batteries, especially after cranking the car to life need a little more ''juice'' to recharge. All these things add up to more effort on the belt's part. The squeal is a sign of that extra effort as well as a good indicator that your belt may be on it's way out. I suggest a new water pump (before you end up stranded) and a new belt (being as you will have to remove the old one anyway).

squealing is almost always caused by a loose belt, which may be loose because it needs replacement or one of the things it is connected to is damaged. if you do not have the proper tools to tighten belts, you should have a mechanic do it. they will probably overcharge you because they want to be on the safe side (replace all belts and the water pump) but it's better.
iirc, that maxima only has a bb value of maybe 2k now, so if it costs over 800, you may as well get rid of it.

My car does this too, and I thought it was the belt, initially. But I got my belts replaced a few weeks ago, and it continued to get worse. It turned out to be the starter. I have a 00 Nissan Sentra. So you might want to make sure it's even a belt. But if it is, I have heard that cold weather can make it worse.

Your last line tells you. ("My water pump is leaking") that could be it as it sorta 'lubricates' the belt (then - shut off) in a manner that, then 'dries' (with residue) which can cause slippage-squeal.
A leaking water pump will develop into a broken water pump rather soon.
The intense cold doesn't help either.
Better remember to check your coolant level.

If it's the original one from 95 it is well past overdue to be replaced. Otherwise, it may just need to be tightened.

put some belt dressing on it. Might be time for a new belt though.
