I have a better idea.

Go to msdn.microsoft.com , sign in (its a free registeration, just use of windows live sign in if you have one) and download Visual C# Express Edition, its a freeware. Then register it (that is also free) after you register you will be shown a page from which you can download introductary book of Visual C# (which is for people who have no previous programming experience). Read that book, once you can make simple applications in Visual C# and are comfortable with the IDE, download XNA Game Studio from msdn's download section (that is also freeware) and go to "Coding4Fun" section of MSDN and read the tutorial that they have over there for making video games using XNA. If you find Visual C# too difficult. Try Visual Basic, all of the tutorials are written for VC# and VBasic.

If you are willing to spend a little money, you could go buy GameMaker, which makes video game development extremely easy. It is aimed at first time developers, the drawbacks associated with GameMaker is that firstly you won't be getting any valuable coding experience when you develop games on it (i.e. Any video game development firm wouldn't hire you based on your skill in GameMaker, and same thing goes for Visual Basic as well, software development companies do not hire people who can write code in VBasic only). And secondly, the executable file that gameMaker generates is far from efficient so simple games tend to require a high end computer system to run.

No matter which path you choose, be prepared to do lots and lots of reading.

Good Luck.

I teach elementary school students to write games using gamemaker (gamemaker.nl). No programming is necessary, although it can enhance the games.
