If you want to play ska I would definately go for a Fender. A Tele is nice. You could also try to get a Fat Strat with the humbucker at the bridge. That would work well for both punk and ska. A Les Paul doesn't work as well for ska music in my opinion plus, an Epiphone les paul is more expensive then a Mexican strat. You're not gonna get a great guitar for $300 but you can get a solid guitar for $300. Just make sure you learn how to solder. They sound and play pretty good for $300 but you will need to fix things here and there.
Long story short, get a Fender Fat strat (for extra chuncky distortion put an invader humbucker in the bridge.)

I have an Epi Les Paul and it's a pretty descent guitar. I also have a Squire Strat that has served me well for many years. Fender Strat Standards can be found also for around $200 or so at Guitar Center. Tele's about the same price for Squire.

I don't recommend getting an Epiphone Les Paul.
Those aren't that great to play and don't sound good to play ska.
However, the Fender tele sounds nice.
Try Guitar Center or eBay.
Better yet, you can go to a reputable guitar store and ask an employee there

either of those you mentioned would be good. i recommend the les paul, cause i play a fender strat and i played my buddies les paul and it was so much better. i'm in a punk band so i know you have to be able to bang out riffs fast as hell. the les paul seemed to be friendlier to that.

I'd say a fender. Remember to check the 12th fret harmonics. That means listen to the harmonics produced when you hold your finger over the 12th fret and compare it to the sound of you actually holding down the twelth fret. Make sure the harmonic and the note sound the same.
