Why do governments spend so much money developing weapons of mass destruction.

USA being the worst offender, having been the only country to actually use Nukes. (not once but twice)

The answer is for control and dominance over the physical world. It makes me sick that countries all over the world spend billions of dollars every year investing in their military sector. And yes, the USA was and still is the worst offender. There's so much undercover military research going on in the U.S.A. right now, it's really unbelievable. The lust for power, dominance, and self gratification is an ancient trait of man, we have always been this way, now we have better techniques of acquiring power and dominance over each other. I'm glad you have enough knowledge to understand this truth about the USA. If I said this in the part of the USA I'm from, I would definitely lose some friends and be labeled "unpatriotic". I've actually traveled to foreign countries before; (Brazil, Mexico, and the Bahamas) and I can understand why people around the world hate us Americans.

Self-defense and the natural human desire for pursuit of science and advancement.

More pragmatically though, we need to keep up with everyone else. We can't sit around and disarm our weapons and not produce while our enemies develop faster than us, and churn out the same weapons of destruction.

It's sad, but its true. Kill or be killed. If you don't like our policy, try North Korea. If you think we develop massive weapons of war, then ask Kim Jong Il to show you around his weapons factories.

What about Saddam using mustard gas on the Kurds? Or Germany using mustard gas in WWI? Or the Italians in Ethopia?

Look, freedom isn't free. And I'm not even from the midwest or the Bible belt. I'm a NY Democrat.

I want our country to be the biggest and best it can be. If people don't like that, tough ****. It is our right as a nation to become powerful.

Governments have the right to develop weapons. And since we are the leader of the world, it is our right to keep an eye on what goes on, and stop the wrong people from making weapons.

Call it self-interest, but that is the way of the world.

I know it's kind of weird but it's more about the power they can give you.
If someone has weapons they're seen as a risk and if they threaten to use them they might get what they want.

If someone has a LOT, like USA, other countries might think- hey we better not mess with them or we'll be long gone before we can put a dent in them.

If only one country had them they'd more or less call the shots and everyone else would need to listen because of the threat of attack

You know what else is stupid?

That we spend tax money making weapons for a problem that already happened, b/c we are afriad it will happen again.

Think of it this way, you don't want a fire in your house, so you put up an alarm so that you can fix the problem when it happens, you don't fill the house with water!!

good point, man, keep preaching!

Dude, you're a pretty smart fella from the responces i see you give. So i bet you do know the answer. And i know some people would say killing a necissity because it kept us from speaking "French" and what-not. The point is that the "US" is just as the french, who were fighting us. I don't see what makes them soo different, look at the US and how its interfereing with the middle east...is it their war to fight? yes 9/11 happened, now going into another country and "rob" them like they did africa and most countries in S.A. so yea, what is my point...a lot of hypocrites. is it cool to criticize one's country? i think i'm going to the top of their list, SUGS.

i hope you feel comfortable saying that because in some other country you would have hunted down and killed. not by me, but the government. and for your information, those bombs werent nuclear you jackass, they were atomic. if they were nuclear, Hawaii would be destroyed by now. besides, the use of those weapons allowed people like you that want to criticize our government without getting all the information to do so! killing has kept us from speaking French (French Indian War) , from saluting pictures of Kaiser Wilhelm (WWI), saluting pictures of the swastika and 'Dolphie (Hitler, WWII) and bowing to Macca (today) these nukes are used to symbolize how powerful America is. shows of force are the things that keep people off you back. and going back to WWII, im not being racial, but Adolf hated blacks, jews, gays (the only thing i support him on), and immagrants. if it wasn't for our A-bomb, you and i both would be in trouble. and if it wasn't for our A-bomb, our men in the south pacific whould have died. obviously, you cant fight a war with a dead soldier, so the European theatre of operations would be unmanned, giving the Nazis time to regroup and attack our eastern coast. bye bye America, correct? dface it, every gun invented and in use, every bullet fired, every missile, nuclear or otherwise, was put into use to save cocky bastards like you from the world outside America. Im sorry i cant go on more, but my fingers are hurting and it's not worth 3 points entertaining dumbass questios like yours. hope you see the light you commie sonnuvuhbitch.

Its all about hawks and doves. Kill or be killed. Hawks bring the war to the people that will someday try to do the same. We just beat them to the punch. Doves are pu$$ies and sit back and wait to be devoured alive by their enemies.
