Ryan Freel is not an impressive player, basically you are just playing him for steals and you better have him at 2B not OF. Johnny Damon is a solid OF and you know his stats on a yearly basis, don't expect too much more than what he did last season (.284, 24 HR, 80 RsBI, 115 R, 25 SB 149 games).
Mosies Alou, when healthy, still rakes, .301, 20 homeruns, 74 RsBI 54 R in 98 games last season (hey those look awfully similar to Damon minus the Runs and SB) and playing in the best offense in the NL will probably help. Papelbon will be the #4 starter on a strong team (Beckett had a 5 ERA and won 16 games). Papelbon can be average and win 20 (if they find a closer) and if he is below average he will save 30.
It's risk/reward, the Papelbon/Alou has much much greater upside, but Damon is extremely less risky. I give up Damon, OFs are always the easiest position to replace, (Gary Matthews Jr anyone). Sidenote, anyone out there not seriously considering Alou for a late round bench spot is making a huge mistake.

Depends a lot on the format and depth of your league. I'd be tempted to go for it. This is basically Damon straight up for Papelbon, as Freel and Alou are pretty fringe players unless your league is very deep (14+ teams, or huge benches)
I like Damon better. I don't think Papelbon will be able to pitch more than 100 or so innings this year. SP is a position notorious for having tons of depth beyond the top 10 or so guys. Damon is a perrenial top 50 fantasy asset. At this point in the season I'd much rather have the sure thing.

Papelbon hasn't even started a game yet - he could be a bust or be great. If he's a bust he will probably get the closer job again.
Freel is a question mark - he hits 40 points lower against RHP and steals most of his bases against RHP which is pretty much his appeal to fantasy. Damon gives you the same numbers every year, it's almost automatic that you know what you get.
Alou will get about 80% of the playing time. His numbers were just killed by that field in SF and his production should go up in shea. I would have to look at my team to decide if this trade is fair. Freel and Damon, you'll give up about 60SB's - can you afford that? Alou will probably hit the same number of HRs as Damon, score 40 fewer runs, Alou should have 20-30 more RBI's.
So the question would be. To give up Freel and Damon, am I that weak pitcher and can i cover 60SB's.
Paps and Alou side - I don't think there is anything to worry about covering for the loss.
In this case - Freel and Damon are probably a steal that will cost the team giving them up about 2 places.

You made the right choice in turning down the original offer. If anything I think your counter may still be too rich.
If Papelbon doesn't excel in the Starter role the Sox will move him back to closing where he may have even more value. Unless Alou has a serious drop, at his age it isn't out of the question, he will be within spitting distance of Damon's value. That puts it back to Freel for Johnny P.

Freel is not worth having unless you are in a huge league with 20+ teams.
Johny Damon is worth a round 4 pick
J Pap is worth a later pick, 6-7 maybe?
Alou is not worth having.

I'd rather have Papelbon than Damon. The other guys aren't good enough to consider.
Know that Papelbon is a starter now, not a closer.

I don't think Alou is going to have a great season this year so I'd consider it.It depends if you have other soild pitchers who can pick up what Papelbon is going to get done.
