The plumber is right it is called water hammer. It is caused by the force of the water stopping suddenly, like shutting the faucet off, and the pipes bang.

It could be that the ball valve in the header tank ( tank in loft ) is locking off too quick causing the pipes to bang. If you look to the side of the tank were the pipe enters there should be an isolation valve ( UK building regs ) usually chrome with a screw type head in the center. Turn this a bit at a time which will reduce the water flow rate. If not this it could be ( as stated by someone earlier ) the washer, if this is worn water will cause it to jump slightly. But rather than change the washer its just as easy to chang the whole ball valve, cost about £4. Turn off the isolation valve ( if none the stop tap ) undo the ball valve with a spanner and replace, EASY.
You could always try and locate the loose pipe but this could be anywhere, wall void or floor, but you could be lucky and insulate as others state. ( builder (plumber ))

The main cause for noisy pipes (clanking and general sounds of that nature) is the pipes moving when water is turned on. They bang against the holes in studs, floor joists, etc. If you can, locate the pipes and try and strap the the best you can, otherwise you might just have to live with it, or try and turn down the pressue as someone suggested, BUT, I think you will find that very difficult to do unless you install a pressure regulator after the meter in your home (but then imagine a decrease in shower pressure and pressure in the sink faucets.

The cold water pipe to the water tank has not been clipped down enough, and this causes the pipe to rattle with the water pressure when the tank has refilled. Try to clip it down more or tie the pipe down if you have to. Don't turn the stop valve down to reduce the water pressure because this wil not allow the tank to refill fast enough when the hot water is run off.

it happened to me the other week i had an air lock in the pipe and when you flushed it sounded like the titanic was sailing by i solved it by turning of the water mains and draining all water of the taps and then got my wife to turn it back on and heled the ballcock down before the water reached the toilet and i could hear a hissing as air was released and now the titanic is sunk lol

you could turn the mains water pressure down a little, thats the main stopcock - probably under the sink. quarter of a turn at a time, until the noise disappears.... also try some extra lagging on the pipe ?

my cold water pipe in my downstairs toilet made a lot of noise too and so i got my landlord out to fix it who said that it was because air was trapped in it. Anyway, he sorted it out and now i can hear the pipes even louder in my bathroom upstairs! Get a professional whatever you do!!!

You can get outside pipe insulation and put it on whole pipe, then get some clips and lock pipe into wall or? so much for rattles.
