why do teens call each other retarted i just dont understand that i got call that all the time when i was in the 5th-12th

for me, the meaning of retarded is if the person is born with a mental or physical disability that prevents them from being able to do something that most others can. usually it is genetic and happens before birth. I also think that it is terrible people make fun of it!!

In the context you describe in your additional details, it's an insult that means very, very stupid.
The word is actually a misnomer, when people thought that a mentally retarded person was the same as a child in their mental development. (IQ is supposed to measure how far above or below your chronological age your "mental age" is. That view has been discredited.)
"Developmentally challenged" is, I believe the currently accepted term for what used to be called "mental retardation."

I think that being retarded means being significantly below average from some point of view. "Mentally retarded" should mean "having one's IQ significantly below the IQ of an average person" (or significantly below the average IQ) (which, of course, does not mean being "absolutely", from any point of view below average - we know that mentally retarded people can develop other abilities better than non-retarded people).
Ah, teens, they use it, of course, because it annoys people - you didn't really expect them to use it as a scientific term, did you.

It means that the person who is using that tem is insensitve to other people.
To be retartded means that the brain is slower in its processing of things. To call someone that is not mentally challanged is an insult.

To me it means the person using the term as it is commonly used is ignorant.
Webster's NWD-ignorant: lacking knowledge or experience
Webster's NWD-retard:to hinder, delay or slow the progress of.
To me that means somebody is going to get whacked if they do not get out of my face.
