I have an opportunity to get a job about 90 miles away from home. I also hae an opportunity to purchase 10 acres of land with trees and a pond out in the country but within 20 miles of the other job. The problem is that the other job earns $36K per year, and I currently make $55K per year.

I have always dreamt of living in the country with lots of space and a big garden and TREES.

What would you do???

I hate to ask a question while providing an answer but..... can you still afford to purchase the "dream land" on the 36K? I can only say that you only live once. I just learned that very life lesson coming out of MAJOR burnout from my job. It has taken me months upon months to get it back together. I held a Regional Manager job in retail and am in my 40's.
This is what I realized I was missing:
1. My great house and land. (familiar?)
2. My husband, my mother, 3 sisters and brother. My dogs too.(no children 'cause I worked too much to consider).
3. I finally morned the loss of my dad and 2 - 19 year old cats (children), 2 years after their passing.
4. I was too busy to buy my annual x-mass ornaments that reflect the years 2003,2004, 2005.
5. I actually talked to some loyal friends that haven't heard from me for years and were still willing to talk to my absent ***!!!
I know, I will never sacrifice my personal for career ever again. It looks like you could have the best of both worlds if the destination job/land area has a lower cost of living.
GOOD LUCK my friend.

There is not enough information to make that decision. Do you have kids yet? Can you afford to make the payments on $36k per year? Does the land have a house? If so is the house in good shape? Can you afford to build/remodel? Can you make do on your other obligations, plus build/remodel/maintain a house on $36k?

I love living in the country too, but not at the expense of possible losing it because I couldn't afford it in the first place.

Well, it would be your own decision, but if you want the best financially, then you should stay. That kind of stuff isn't really for me, though. I've always been more of a dreamchaser. I say don't stay trapped in your prison. In other words, yeah, follow your heart and hold your dreams close.
