The ending was great. It left plenty of room for one to imagine what could happen and led perfectly to The People Of Sparks. The Prophet of Yonwood explains some of the mysteries left from the other two books. I can't wait for the forth book to come out!

The ending was mysterious and left you hanging. What is about this journal? Why did they bring the people to Ember? If you mean relating to the real world, then no. If you have read the People of Sparks (the sequel), it explains that the story takes place in the future where they take engines out of cars because they have no more gas to fuel them. It does not relate to the real world.

But, if you mean realistic by what happened, then I think so. I haven't read this book for a while and my memory of it is kind of clouded. I remember that they use the river to escape.
