We aren't all obsessed.
But most confuse the flag (a mere piece of cloth, a symbol) for the things that it represents.
People in general tend to confuse symbols with values -- and end up destroying the value over protecting the symbol.
That's why I'm against worship of symbols; it substitutes for valuing genuine values.
"See what a good American I am? I worship this cloth and would kills anyone who disses it -- I hate everything it represents, but because I sob when I see it, that makes me a good American."

When you have disparate states barely united by a civil war and then crushingly powerful central government rule the symbols that you use to represent unity by necessity have to become more powerful than the forces of decentralization. With a republic you're fighting the tide, only Empires have achieved long-term stability in the past (so far).

Im emigrating to the US and so will have to pledge aligence to the flag.
I'm currently English and don't have to pledge aligence to to the British flag. I find it strange too! Here in Britain, we seem to assume that if you are born here, you automatically are dedicated to Britain and its' traditions.
Then again, it could be that "stiff upper lip" thing. We Brits feel embarassed by public shows of emotions, so pledging aligence to flags and so on, makes us feel very uncomfortable and squirmy!

It's American culture. National pride is instilled in young Americans and for most it's carried through.

Usually it is people who have been in the military who feel this way. Their friends were wounded, maimed, and died for that flag, so to them, disrespecting the flag means disrespecting all of the people who sacrificed for liberty & freedom.
