Maybe fish are better suited for you.

Ferrets are great. I have two. They do require a lot of care and work best in pairs. In other words you will have to pay attention to them and you should own 2 or more. Being that ferrets run about 100-150 a piece this may be out of your budget. This is not even including the 150 dollar cage...20 dollar bags of food...copious amounts of cat litter, water bottle, food bowl...the list goes on.

Sorry to say but it is my personal opinion that ferrets should be out of their cage any chance they get. The only time mine go in their cage (to be locked up) is during the night when I am sleeping. The reason I can do this is because I keep my ferrets confined to my bedroom. You do not have to let your ferrets run the entire home! I think that is actually unpractical and dangerous to let them roam about that large of an area. If you make sure your bedroom is ferret-proofed and provide lots of toys and boxes filled with fun stuff for them to explore, your room is all they will need.

I really think you should reconsider a pair of ferrets...that is, if you can afford it AND you get two. One ferret will really get lonely. :(

(This is my first answer ever lol)

It depends on what exactly what your preferences and dislikes are. I personally have two gerbils but you said you don't like anything that is a small rodent. Hmmm. There's a few things you could get. The three i'm thinking of are African Pygmy Hedgehog (Little more unusual, but really fun, nocturnal), Budgie (Easy to get, very smart, very messy), and maybe Chinchillas (Don't really know much about them, although I heard they're great)

There is also a great Pet Selector quiz at www.selectsmart.com. Do some research before you buy though, see what you like!

I not a big cat person but all of my friends have them. I don't know a lot about cats but i know that there are dogs that you can get that don't have too much dandruff so they don't make people allergic to them. My friend has a minuter poodle (I'm not fond of poodles) and it is one that doesn't have allergies.

if your not a dog person you can always get a fish. hehe

You can also get a bird. Just remember that parrots last a long time so you could get like a parakeet, they ar cute but some make a lot of noise.

get a Sphynx. their hairless cats. i don't know a whole lot about cats but i have had a sphynx in before and their very cool cats=] but I'm not much of a cat person because most are independent and conceited so i would recommend a dog of coarse. go to an animal shelter there are tons of little sweeties just looking for a friend to love. birds are great too

I would suggest a rabbit...but those and dogs don't make a good combination. So, maybe some fish...or a cat. Or even better..I would suggest a chinchilla.
