Everyone from the streets knows him as Tip. When he would call people, they thought he was saying "Chip" so he would spell it out for them, "T.I.P". That kind of stuck with me. When he signed to LaFace Records he was using T.I.P. When LaFace merged with Arista, that put him on the same label with Q-Tip and they felt having two artists with names that similar would be hard to market. He had been there longer than T.I.P. So they thought it made more since to ask him to change his name...That's when He bacame T.I.
