There's a lot of confusion about what gender equality MEANS.
It is an undefined term. Without the need to protect the genes, it is no longer necessary to protect the womb. Medicine and Civil society are doing a pretty good job with that. Plus how much strength does it take to push a button so that a machine lifts 1000 tons? How much dexterity does it take to push a button so that the chip is seated on the PC board to within 0.0001? Little and none - technology is the great equalizer. So, the question is what do you DO with all the peoples time no longer spent in hunting, gathering, chewing hides, nursing young, cleaning caves, etc. There are two extemes: One: complete equality anything which can NOT be done by a sub-average (as defined in court - our legislators are certainly too cowardly to do it!) member of one sex (er sorry gender..) must be made illegal.
This would include football, boxing, combat, pregnancy, nursing, fertilization, ad absurdum. Two: the other extreme is to have a (socially or legally) defined set of economic and social roles depending on gender. Nurses = female, Combat troops = male, Day CAre Workers = Female, NFL Linebacks = male, etc, etc.
The problem with both of these extremes is that they both are versions of centralized planning. Which is known to be a poor allocator of resources. And don't kid yourself this issue is largely about economics (wealth and productivity). So, if government COULD (they can't) perfectly level the playing field so that the best candidate was chosen based on abilities rather than stereotypes for any job or responsibility productivity would go up and the rich would get richer (along with the poor it is hoped).
My job involves some heavy lifting 50 - 75 lbs occasionally. Should we re-define the job so that the maximum lifting is 25 lbs to allow the "weaker" to compete? ( Including me as I get older) My job also requires eyesight: should we redefine and restructure it to allow anybody (blind or not) be able to execute it? The benefit is social but the cost is private. How do you balance Social goods with private costs?
The good of the many ALWAYS out weighs the good of the few?
The RIGHTS of the individual ALWAYS out weighs the good of the many? Nope and Nope. So here we are stumbling toward that perfect world where every body has the job, profession or occupation that they are best fitted for and they are happiest/most fulfilled doing. Maybe next year...

Without gender equality I couldn't have joined the military and learn about how to fix jets.Gender equality is important because women are intellgent. The old-fashioned ideas that men were the "bread-winners" and the smarter gender has been put to rest in my mind. I like being in charge of a technical military job because it proves women are just as capable of the same jobs men are. How could our society progress without recognizing gender doesn't make you more smart or less smart? A woman scientist could discover something important before a man and vice versa but if it were limited to only one gender then the discovery could take much longer. Everyone is unique in their contributions to society. The benefits for me is that I have the same benefits as men which means to me that I don't have to marry someone based more on what he can provide for me. In a more old-fashioned society our paretns would be looking for our spouse to insure the future of the family.

Well, the important of equality gender, women are able to claim the same pay check that men do, although still not the same. On the other hand, funny watching the women face consiquences of having to pay for their husband or partners dinner at the restaurant.
Another importance, gay and lesbians are now able to say I am gay or I am a lesbian at work. It must be hard not fitting in with the two dominating gender.
The other importance part, men are now able to say they are house husband instead of women having to be house -wives all the time because of the kids.
So important thing about it, all can get to taste what the other gender's role is. Meaning working position.
Cheers

The advantage of any kind of equality is that you don't deny yourself the chance of getting the best PERSON for the job.
