Economics is a crap shoot. Play it long enough and all possible outcomes will happen. People do not live for ever. Only a small portion of the people in 3rd world countries today will ever have a standard of living similar to what we enjoy in the USA today. Memories are short. In the late 1920's and 1930's many people in the USA suffered through our great depression. We just happen to be the lucky ones at the moment. The 2nd world war an the cold war drove technology in our country and improved productivity of our work force. We the workers were allowed to keep a portion of the gains because there was an enemy of the rich in the USA that frightened the rich. The rich had to keep us happy to retain their wealth. This concept is often summarized by saying the Enemy of my Enemy is my friend.

Living standards everywhere have gone way up since the 19th Century.

Third world people are far better off, just based on life expectancy and access to knowledge. Famine are not an accepted occurrence like they once were: they are now almost always caused by human actions such as war and genocide.

This does not hold true, of course, to certain closed societies, or those cultures that want to go back to the 12th Century. Their situation will not improve.
