According to the movie, the cops came at the end where she was with her sister Blanche, she was dancing around like she was in la-la land. It would seem they carted her off to the Sanitarium.

she slowly danced on the beach as the authorities came to Blanche's assistance... Dancing the dance she did as a child on the stage performing.... one is left wondering.....
