A lot of their edge comes from 2 things, which are marketing and franchising. The McDonald's corporation themselves do not have to worry about expanding their stores personally, as people will pay a franchising fee to start up one of their own. These franchisee's then benefit from having an international advertising campaign that allows them to be able to succeed without having to personally take on the advertising responisibility. As soon as a McDonalds chain store opens, people instantly will recognize it and patronize the store. Also they have marketed certain foods that appeal to certain tastes depending on which country they are operating in, so they are more flexible than just offering a chicken sandwich and big mac everywhere in the world if that region has particular tastes (or a religious belief against eating beef).
