The American Boot Camp programmes seem to have a marked effect to the better on straying kids, stopping them before they get to the prison stage. Do you think a similar idea would work in Britain. Or do we have to many do-gooders who would interfere wiht the rough treatment that the kids would get.

And do you think that it could actually straighten the kids up before it was too late, or could it do more damage than good

Firstly, Government needs to set strict, understandable laws for all, and needs to provide the policeing resources to enable these laws to be enforced. A line needs to be drawn in the sand, and if you go over that line, you will be tried and convicted.

Boot camps are part of the answer. Boot camps for both the kids and the parents. In many cases, the parents are worse than the kids - I should know - I work in UK Criminal Justice.

There's no need for bootcamps. They should try educating them properly and having harsher sentencing for crimes.

There are too many do-gooders letting the children off with it and that's why most of them end up at the boot camp stage.

How stupid is it that they've only JUST started informing parents by phone when children don't turn up at school. AND this is only a trial in certain parts of the country.
AND before that they were threatening the parents with jail if the children kept skipping school. That doesn't make any sense.
How the hell are parents meant to know what their teen does when they leave the house dressed for school?

How about the fact that the people in school actually trying to study get distracted by the idiots, and ignored by the teachers as they try to calm the bad ones down.
They even give the worst ones special trips (payed for!) and all sorts of things to reward them for their "good/not as bad behaviour"

Wtf is the point anymore? If I was at school now (as one of the good ones) I would be thoroughly fed up of being treated like that. That's one of the reasons I left school early

Sounds like a good idea if reform and not punishment is the goal.
I also approve of putting prisoners to work like in America, give them a routine, discipline and skills and turn them into normal citizens as reformers like Bentham intended, instead of letting them watch cable TV all day.

Yes i think we should. The problem nowadays is the lack of discipline from some parents and the teachers in schools.Kids need boundaries not only to keep them in line, but it also makes them feel secure. They need helping before they get into the cycle of commiting offences and going to prison.
