Sirens are rumored to be absolutely gorgeous, with voices so beautiful that men who hear them are instantly bespelled. It is also said that women are immune to the Siren's call. A Siren's diet includes humans. Sirens are mischievous things. Siren's use their songs for multiple uses. One is to lure men for food, and the second is to crash ships. Siren's have been used in many legends, including the legend of Sinbad. In some legends Siren's are depicted as a type of Mermaid, in others a creature with the body of a bird and the head of a woman. During the time of when the legend of the Siren was created, little was known about the oceans and the secrets it hid within it's depths. The Siren was most likely created to forewarn of the unknown dangers of the sea.

The significance of the siren is in showing us that things that appear attractive on the surface are not necessarily good for us.
The sirens sang with beautiful voices and were themselves beautiful. If you were seduced by the sirens you became their next meal. Just as drug and alcohol abuse can seem great at first if you succumb to their temptations it can ruin your life. The lesson of the sirens is to be cautious of judging things on their first appearance, it could lead to your downfall.

They are just mythological sea nymphs.
I guess the significance lies within the threat of a man drowning when he succumbs to the song of the sirens and jumps into the sea?

In a nut shell (Why that phrase became popular, I will never know) is that Sirens lived on small rocky islands off the country coast, or inlets and sing a seductive song that would lure sailors towards them with the hypnotising melodies, and kill them for food.

I hope im not doing your homework.
Sirens are mythological creatures which usually entraps seafarers and fishermen.
They are best remembered on the Greek Myth's Odyssey. Odysseus and his crew were passing over these lonely island, known to be the home of sirens. He heard this soothing voice, singing his name that it drove him almost mad that he would forget his journey and sail instead to the source of this enchanting voice.
Fortunately, one of his crew physically restrained him thus his life was saved. The only way to escape them is to put wax on your ears.
It is known that those who followed the voice were doomed never to return again.

Specifically, they are beautiful maidens who's spellbinding song and beauty draws men to their deaths.
Metaphorically, they could represent illusion, and the dangers of following something blindly because it looks beautiful, because what you beleive to be true may be completely wrong.
Then again, they could represent Lust and it's evils, or even the evils of women.
