It sounded like she was a good person in the beginning, but then during her encounter with the Wizard, her attitude changed and Moribble made an announcement for all to look out for an enemy that must be found and captured. What the heck happened?!

The way the book is written the Wizard is the bad guy. He's starting new policies that are harmful to the land, to everyone. Elphaba sees him as dangerous and evil. And as the reader seeing it through her eyes, I at least agreed with her. He sounded nuts to me. Granted, I think she took things a little too far. She was more than politically opinionated. She was an activitist who was willing to put her life and other lives on the line for her cause. It's been a while since I've read the book but doesn't she work for a group that essentially kills those that disagree with her???? Anyway, I wouldn't be sympathetic to the violence...but the wizard's politics aren't beyond criticism either.

I don't think Elphaba was necessarily evil. She just disagreed with the Wizard's policies and laws and was trying to fight against that for what she believed in. But because she was fighting to change things for what she thought was the better, she was labelled evil and an enemy.

She doesn't turn evil, that's the whole point. The way "Wicked" interprets the Oz story, it is the wizard who is an evil dictator and Elphaba, the so-called "wicked witch" is simply a victim of circumstance.
