I think it is expensive but that's no excuse, they have to go at some time otherwise you end up with a thirty odd year old still at home learning absolutely nothing about independence!!
It's not teaching them anything by allowing them to stay at home past a certain age. Yes they might have to scrimp & scrape for a while & god forbid they might not be able to afford Sky tv/a social life/everyday luxuries but that's what everybody else has had to do,you gradually set up home bit by bit.A friend of ours whined until he was in his 30's that he couldn't possibly afford to leave home even though he went out regularly/bought tons of clothes/joined a gym/bought cds, dvds etc/went on holidays etc... he eventually got a nice little council flat, stayed in for a while & now can afford things for it by budgeting.
It's not selfish to want your place back to yourself,a lot of these 'kids' are fully grown adults who need to move out & be an adult which means stop making excuses.Let the parents have some peace-they deserve it!

I Beleive, Yes it is getting WAY too expensive for kids to leave home these days.
I am 17 years old and my mom is working her hardest to get me and my 2 sisters ready for college, the earliest time i could go to college, without ending up with no money for college, is 22-24!
I do not mind waiting that long, NOT because i am lazy and don't to do the work, I want to spend as much time with my mom as i can. I hate being separated from my mom and, inside, i am mentally preparing for it, my mom is really preparing for it too, she dos'nt even like to talk about me leaving for collegs without crying somtimes.
I guess what i am saying is that even though i hav'nt had kids yet, I know i would miss them like crazy and you will too.
Just enjoy them while they are with you because, once they go to college, they're own lives start and many of them go off and get married or in pursuit of a career etc.
Many kids are in college 10 years doing a residency for a doctors degree.
Just love and enjoy your kids while you have them with you, even if they go to college at 25, you still have 35-40 years all to your self.
I hope this helps you
and may God bless you and your family!

My partners brother still lives at home and he's 43! He's just lazy and has never had a decent job in his life. But on the whole it is very expensive, jobs don't pay enough to get a mortgage. Plus with council tax and other bills being sky high no one can afford to pay them alone.

They are lazy, selfish and want to continue the lifestyle their parents have given them, instead of starting low and working their way up. Too bad, because they are also missing out on improving their character, and interesting life experiences. Like how much food you can buy for five bucks for a whole week.

We know for a fact that wages haven't kept up with inflation these days. College is expensive, they go up with apartment rates every year, gas is still expensive, electric bill here in TX were through the roof and I think I heard on the news that America has entered into a (-1) negative one personal savings rate. So that might factor into the equation.

Housing shortage/house prices certainly has a lot to do with it. Don't look forward to having the house to yourself, believe me, you will miss them - who wants a quiet house? My daughter (31) has just bought an apartment and I miss the company, the chats and especially the laughter! Enjoy it while they're at home, there will be PLENTY of time to have the house to yourself later. :) I would add that most kids aren't lazy - my daughter has two jobs and worked hard so was able to put a good deposit on her apartment.

I stay behind to look after my mother who isn't well. I wouldn't put her in a home waiting for her to die so i had to work nights for years and sleep during the day, she's Ok if someone is in the house with her. Didn't do much for my health but if anyone asks me if i'm OK i just lie as usual.

Fact is, you can't get very far anymore without a higher degree, and it is very expensive to pursue a higher degree while also fully supporting yourself without winding up very in debt. And by a higher degree, I don't mean college - I mean a Master's and then some. Even a college degree doesn't get you very far anymore.
