Paypal is pretty safe, just be aware it is an automated money making system therefore it can respond to situations in an automated way. For example, I purchased an item on ebay through paypal and it turned out to be a blatant misrepresentation by the seller. I informed paypal within 24 hours and provided the necessary proofs. Paypal insisted on me getting an independent assessment that the product bought was in fact not the one represented, even though the seller had already admitted this through email. This was at my own personal expense and I never recieved a refund of this. Anyway I did this all within the time period specified by paypal and then they proceeded to tell me that I would recieve no refund as I had failed to provide proof of misreperesentation within the time period. This was more than 2 months after the original 'sale' and after alot of to-ing and fro-ing between myself, paypal and the seller who had admited liabilitiy right from the start! Eventually 3 months after the sale the money appeared as 'credit' on my paypal account with no email or correspondance stating that this was going to happen!
Having said that I use them alot for other transactions and have found them to be fine - It appears that this system fails in the event of any irregularities!

I use it as last resort. Yes it is safe. You will get tons of phising emails if you use it, do not respond the the email unless you sent it to spoof@paypal ect. I use it as LAST resort. PAYPAL is NOT an escrow account. You can buy something from someone, use paypal and if you get bad stuff too bad. Pal pay will not help you. I use my Credit card first if I can and paypal last. I can deal with my bank! I don't like have a THIRD Party having my CC#. I have canceled my paypal account but you can still use paypal on a each use basis if you need too. Good luck.

It's somewhat safe, for you have to question emails. I once received emails telling me to update my info, but it was to a fake site. The site looked exactly the same. I reported it to Paypal and since then I haven't received one. You just have to be aware if you recieve a message like that and only sign on to the website it's self.

What Alex said about the fake website happened to me too...phishing...
But yes, Paypal is very secure. It's the sellers on Ebay that you should be careful with. If they don't accept Paypal, look somewhere else for the item.
