Laptops:
↓ Get stolen
↓ Have poor Ram and hard Drive space
↓ Can not play games
↓ Are slow and more prone to virus
↓ Easier to hack
↓ Harder to upgrade
↓ Poor battery and screen life
↓ Die after 5 years or so
Desktops:
↓ Not portable
↓ Last much longer
↓ Store more
↓ Run faster
↓ Easier to fix
↓ Play games
Sadly I am being biased but a desktop will serve you so much more.

It really depends on how much you would use a computer on the go. I am a college student and have a laptop and a desktop. The laptop is really nice for taking to some classes for notes and such, and for group meetings. Yet the desktop is better for doing more things becuase it is generally more powerful and storing more information. So really it does come down to what you think you will use it more for, entertainment (desktop) or school on the go (laptop). Hope this helps you a little :)

I am in college and i got a desktop. I found myself wanting to goto the library and work but you can't bring a desktop with you. I would definately say laptop. Although you can't manually configure a laptop, (like your going to anyway), it still is a great thing.
Keep in mind, it all depends on what your major is. If your major is something like computer science or graphic design, you need a computer with alot of memory or RAM to keep up with the software you will be using. What you might want to do, is get you a decent desktop to last you through highschool since all you will be using it for is to check your email, myspace, and chat with friends, and save up some money to get you another computer in college.
The reason i say that is, by the time you get to college with your 4 year old computer, it will already be outdated or too old for it to be as amazing as when you first bought it. Plus, software developers and computer technicians are constantly making newer and better computers every day.
I hope this helps you out. From one college student, to a future one.

it depends how far you live from college. if you are living 5 mins walk away from college, go for a desktop as you can upgrade it, it is cheaper and you'll get more computing power for less money. if you are living far away from college, get a laptop, a 500 dollar laptop from acer or dell should get the job done

Get a good laptop, but even more critical is to also get a cable-lock for the laptop....a good one, to prevent theft....and USE it! Never leave it unattended without that lock on.
